Marvel Comics, founded in 1939 and later rising to prominence in the 1960s, is one of the world’s leading comic book publishers. Unlike earlier invincible heroes, Marvel’s characters were written with human flaws, personal struggles, and moral complexity, which helped redefine the comic book genre. Operating today as part of Marvel Entertainment, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, Marvel’s influence spans far beyond print, shaping blockbuster films, television, and global pop culture through its vast, interconnected Marvel Universe.
DC Comics, founded in 1934, is one of the world’s most influential comic book publishers, known for iconic heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The company helped usher in the Silver Age of Comics in the late 1950s and 1960s, reviving and modernizing superhero stories with fresh characters and imaginative storytelling. DC’s blend of epic heroism, moral themes, and legendary characters has shaped comics, films, and global pop culture for decades.
Several third-party comic publishers have left a lasting mark alongside Marvel and DC. EC Comics pioneered horror and sci-fi stories, Fawcett Comics created Captain Marvel, and later publishers like Dark Horse, Image, and Valiant introduced creator-owned and innovative characters, helping diversify and expand the comic book industry.
Pedigrees are recognized CGC collections that meet specific criteria: they must come from the original owner, feature vintage material, include a substantial number of comics, and consist of high-grade issues. Notable Collections, on the other hand, are significant collections we’ve brought to market that may not meet all pedigree criteria but are important enough to highlight and name.
